Find Your Appliance Fault

Start with the appliance and what it is doing. Most of what we are called out to in Ajax shows no error code at all, so the code column is the last one rather than the first.

Appliance What it is doing What it usually is Code, if any
Washer Water on the basement floor Close the taps behind the machine. If it stops, the fill hoses or inlet valve is the source. If it only happens on drain, look at the standpipe and the house drain none
Washer Leaking from the front of a front-loader The door boot seal, split at the bottom where coins and clips collect none
Washer Will not spin, or drains slowly Pump filter and standpipe height before the pump itself varies by brand
Washer Banging or walking Load distribution, then levelling. On a 1950s basement floor that has settled, levelling matters more than owners expect none
Washer Musty smell Residue in the door seal and dispenser. A humid lakeside summer makes it worse none
Washer Stops part way through a cycle A fill or drain step it never completed. Check the tap, the inlet screen and the drain hose varies by brand
Washer Burning smell Stop and unplug it. Belt, motor or a seized pump, and running it on makes the repair bigger none
Dryer Tumbles cold Element, thermal fuse or thermostats. A blown fuse is a symptom, so the vent run gets checked in the same visit varies by brand
Dryer Takes far longer than it used to Lint screen and the duct run. A long basement duct with several elbows is common in older Ajax houses and chokes airflow none
Dryer Getting too hot, or a burning smell Stop using it. Lint against the heater and a blocked duct are the usual pair, and this one is a fire risk none
Dryer Rumbling or squealing Drum rollers, idler and belt, normally replaced together none
Dryer Stops part way and will not restart until it cools The thermal cut-out doing its job. The vent run is the cause, not the fuse none
Dishwasher White film on glasses, chalky residue Scale. At about 7 grains, Ajax water deposits faster than most of the GTA. Rinse aid first, then the spray arm holes none
Dishwasher Water standing in the tub Filters and sump, then the drain pump and the hose loop under the sink varies by brand
Dishwasher Water on the kitchen floor at the door The door gasket, or foam from the wrong detergent. Both look the same on the floor none
Dishwasher Dishes coming out wet Rinse aid empty before anything else, then the heating circuit. Scale on the element is the slow version of this none
Dishwasher Not filling The supply tap and the inlet screen before the valve varies by brand
Dishwasher Smells bad The filter and sump. A ten minute clean solves most of these without a visit none
Dishwasher Door will not latch The catch, or racks pushed forward. A door that will not latch stops the cycle before it starts none
Fridge Running but not getting cold The defrost circuit or the evaporator fan long before the compressor varies by brand
Fridge Freezer cold, fresh food warming Frost blocking the evaporator so air stops moving between compartments none
Fridge Water under the crispers A blocked defrost drain, which is a clearing job rather than a parts job none
Fridge Ice maker has stopped The fill tube frozen or the supply shut off. Hard water also scales the fill valve over time none
Fridge Runs constantly Door seal, over-packed shelves, or a condenser coil furred with dust none
Fridge Loud or new noises The evaporator or condenser fan. Gurgling from the back is refrigerant and normal none
Freezer Running warm, contents softening Lid or door gasket first, then the thermostat none
Freezer Heavy frost on the walls Manual defrost models frost by design. If it returns within days, suspect the seal none
Range One surface element will not heat The element or the receptacle it plugs into. Burnt contacts are common where a pot has boiled over none
Range Oven runs hot or cold The oven sensor and its connector before the board varies by brand
Range Oven has become noisy The convection fan on models that have one none
Range Oven door locked shut after cleaning Let it cool fully first, since many release on their own. After that the latch motor and its switch F9 range on many brands
Any Dead, nothing at all The outlet and the breaker before anything inside the appliance none

Leaking right now? Close the taps behind the machine, switch it off at the breaker and call us rather than running another cycle. If the water only appears while the machine is draining, and the floor drain backs up at the same time, that is the house drain rather than the appliance, and we will tell you so instead of selling you a pump.

⚠ Technical safety notice: A washer or dishwasher pairs a 120V supply with water inside the cabinet, and an electric dryer or range draws 240V. Isolate the appliance at the breaker and confirm the circuit is dead before removing any panel or placing meter leads. In a basement laundry room, standing water and a live appliance are a combination to leave alone: cut power at the panel first, not at the machine. Sealed refrigeration systems in Ontario require an Ozone Depletion Prevention certificate and are not owner-serviceable. Gas appliances are outside what we take on at present.

Refrigerator Repair in Ajax

The Ajax-specific one is the ice maker. At roughly seven grains of hardness the fill valve and fill tube scale up faster here than in most of the GTA, so an ice maker that has slowed or stopped is worth checking for scale before the whole assembly is condemned.

Otherwise it is ordinary refrigeration work, and the diagnosis that matters is separating a defrost fault from an evaporator fan from the sealed system, because those three cost very different amounts.

Washer Repair in Ajax

Levelling is the local wrinkle. A postwar basement floor in south Ajax has had seventy years to settle, and a machine walking on an out-of-level floor gets blamed for a suspension fault it does not have. We check the feet before opening the cabinet.

The other Ajax-specific check is on a leak call: if water appears only while the machine drains, and the floor drain backs up at the same time, that is the house drain rather than the washer, and we will say so.

Dishwasher Repair in Ajax

Hard water is what sets Ajax dishwashers apart. At about seven grains, scale shows up first as a chalky film on glasses and later as a coated heating element, which is why a machine here slowly stops drying rather than failing outright.

That is a cheap diagnosis and an expensive misdiagnosis: we measure the element before anyone spends money on a control board.

Dryer Repair Ajax

Dryer Repair in Ajax

Where you are in Ajax changes this one. A dryer in the corner of a 1950s basement south of the tracks has to push its exhaust up and along to an exterior wall, often through two or three elbows, and every elbow costs airflow. Those houses generate most of our thermal fuse calls.

A fuse is a symptom, not a cause, so we clear the duct in the same visit. In the newer subdivisions north of the 401 the run is usually short and the fault is more often the element itself.

Stove and Cooktop Repair in Ajax

A single surface element that will not heat is the element or the receptacle it plugs into, and burnt contacts there are ordinary in any kitchen where a pot has boiled over. Fitting a new element into a damaged receptacle destroys it, so both get inspected.

We service electric cooking appliances. Gas is outside what we take on at present.

Oven Repair Ajax

Oven Repair in Ajax

An oven that runs hot or cold starts at the oven sensor and its connector, not at the board. It is a cheap resistance device that drifts with age, and measuring it cold takes minutes.

A door locked shut after a self-clean cycle often releases on its own once the cavity cools, so let it cool fully before booking. That is a call you can cancel.

Freezer Repair in Ajax

The Ajax version of this call is usually a chest freezer in an unheated garage. Some older freezers sense cabinet temperature only, so when the space around them drops far enough in January they stop cycling and the contents soften while the unit appears to be running normally.

If your freezer lives in a garage and your food is soft, say so when you book, because it changes what we expect to find.

Range Hood and Microwave Repair in Ajax

A hood that has stopped pulling is usually grease rather than a motor. Baffle filters that have not been through a dishwasher in two years choke a healthy fan, and in renovated kitchens we also find recirculating hoods that were never ducted outside at all.

We repair built-in and over-the-range microwaves. Countertop units are rarely worth a technician visit and we say so on the phone rather than after we arrive.

Ajax Water and What It Does to Your Appliances

Ajax draws its water from Lake Ontario through the Ajax Water Supply Plant, which serves both Ajax and Pickering. The Region of Durham publishes hardness for the Pickering, Ajax, Whitby and Oshawa supply at 125 mg/L as calcium carbonate, which is roughly 7.3 grains per gallon.

That puts Ajax at the harder end of lake-supplied water in this part of Ontario. It is nothing like well water in Guelph or Waterloo, where 20 to 35 grains is normal, but it is meaningfully harder than London at about 6 grains and it deposits faster than most GTA customers expect. Durham's own position is worth repeating: a softener "is a personal preference and not required" with the water it supplies.

  • Rinse aid does most of the work. The chalky film on glasses that owners read as a broken dishwasher is usually an empty rinse aid reservoir plus scale in the spray arm holes.
  • Scale kills heating elements slowly. A dishwasher that stopped drying and a kettle that furs up are the same story at different speeds. We measure element resistance before condemning a control board.
  • Ice makers feel it first. The fill valve and fill tube are the narrowest water path in the house, so an ice maker that has slowed is often scale rather than a failed assembly.
  • If you are on a softener, watch the salt dose. Over-softened water foams, and foam inside a washer or dishwasher reads on the control board as a fault that is not there.

Hardness is one figure the Region publishes and we can quote. We do not publish street-by-street water numbers, because Durham does not break its supply down that way.

What We Find by Ajax Neighbourhood

Ajax is unusual among GTA towns in that you can almost date a house by where it stands. The town did not grow outward from an old main street; it was built as a wartime munitions community in 1939 on expropriated farmland, and the residential town was laid on top of it in waves. The age of the house predicts the appliance problem better than the brand does.

Area Mostly built What that means when we arrive
Pickering Village 1800s onward The oldest stock in town, a village that predates Ajax itself. Retrofitted basement laundry, uneven floors, narrow stair turns that decide whether a machine comes out or gets worked on in place
South Ajax, below the tracks 1950s The original postwar town, laid out under CMHC when the population was barely 5,000. Compact houses, laundry moved into a basement corner, long vent runs with several elbows. The dryer complaints in this part of town are usually ducting
Central Ajax 1970s Subdivisions filling the vacant land between the old town and the highway. Standard openings, basement or main-floor laundry, and kitchens now on their second or third generation of appliances
Westney Heights and north of the 401 Early 1980s Built when mortgage rates ran 18 to 20 per cent, so the houses are sensible rather than lavish. Straightforward access and standard-size appliances
North Ajax, Audley and the newer subdivisions Late 1990s onward Second-floor laundry above finished space is common here. A leak damages a ceiling rather than a slab, which is why we treat a weeping washer in these streets as urgent rather than routine
Pickering Beach and the lakeshore Mixed Humid through the summer. Condensation on a wine cabinet door and musty smells in a front-load washer are more common near the water, and neither is a fault

Anything above is a description of the housing, not a claim about your machine. We do not know what has failed until we look at it.

Getting to You in Ajax

Two practical things make an Ajax visit go faster.

  • Give us a cross street. Ajax names most of its streets after the crews of HMS Ajax, HMS Exeter and HMS Achilles from the Battle of the River Plate. It is a genuinely nice piece of town history and it also means a lot of short, similar-sounding names that satellite navigation handles poorly. A nearby intersection saves more time than a postcode.
  • Tell us which side of the 401 you are on, and whether the appliance is upstairs. A second-floor laundry pair and a basement pair are different jobs before we even open anything.
  • In winter, if the appliance lives in an unheated garage, say so when you book. It changes what we expect to find and sometimes changes the diagnosis entirely.

How an Ajax Repair Actually Runs

  1. You call or book online. Have the brand, the model number from the rating plate, and what the machine is doing. A photo of the plate saves a visit's worth of guessing.
  2. We give you a window, same day for most Ajax bookings depending on the hour you reach us. Calls are answered between 7am and 10pm, seven days a week.
  3. The technician diagnoses at your address and quotes before starting. You decide with the number in front of you.
  4. If you go ahead, the service call is free. Labour runs $92 to $278 and the service call is free with the repair. If you choose not to proceed, you pay the diagnostic and nothing else.
  5. Parts and labour carry up to a 3 month warranty. Common parts travel on the van, so a good share of Ajax repairs finish in one visit.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you charge for the service call?

Not when you go ahead with the repair. The diagnostic fee is waived and you pay only for the repair itself. If you decide against the repair after we have diagnosed it, the diagnostic stands on its own.

Can you come the same day in Ajax?

Most days, yes, for bookings that reach us early enough. Same-day depends on where you are and what the day already holds, and we tell you honestly when we book rather than after.

Is Ajax water hard enough to damage my appliances?

It is at the harder end for lake-supplied water in this region, about 7.3 grains per gallon on Durham's published figure. That is enough to scale a dishwasher element and an ice maker valve over years, and not enough to require a softener. Durham itself calls a softener a personal preference.

Do you work on gas appliances?

Not at present. We service electric ranges, cooktops, dryers and the full refrigeration, dishwashing and laundry range on the electric side.

Do you cover Pickering Village and Pickering Beach?

Yes. Both are within Ajax and are covered on the same terms as the rest of the town, along with Audley, Westney Heights and the newer subdivisions north of the 401.

Will you work on a rental where I am the tenant?

Yes. We handle tenant-arranged calls regularly and we are equally comfortable being booked by a landlord or a property manager with the tenant as the site contact.

What if the part is not on the van?

We order it and return. You are quoted the whole job up front, so the second visit does not become a second bill.

Appliance Repair Near Me in Ajax

We cover the whole of Ajax, from Pickering Village and the 1950s streets in the south through Central Ajax and Westney Heights to Audley and the newer subdivisions in the north, plus Pickering Beach and the lakeshore. We also serve the neighbouring Durham municipalities, Pickering to the west and Whitby and Oshawa to the east. Call (647) 955-6866 and we will tell you straight away whether your address is inside our Ajax run.

Your Local Ajax Appliance Technicians

The Ajax work is done by our own technicians rather than a call centre passing your address to whoever answers. Every repair is quoted at your door before anything is opened, parts and labour carry up to a 3 month warranty, and the team is fully insured. Our lead technician Dmitriy D. holds ODP certification for sealed refrigeration systems, which Ontario requires for any work on a sealed system.

We would rather tell you a repair is not worth doing than take the money, and on an older machine we will say so before you commit. Our fix or replace guide walks through the same arithmetic we use at the door.
