Refrigerator Repair in Ajax
The Ajax-specific one is the ice maker. At roughly seven grains of hardness the fill valve and fill tube scale up faster here than in most of the GTA, so an ice maker that has slowed or stopped is worth checking for scale before the whole assembly is condemned.
Otherwise it is ordinary refrigeration work, and the diagnosis that matters is separating a defrost fault from an evaporator fan from the sealed system, because those three cost very different amounts.

Levelling is the local wrinkle. A postwar basement floor in south Ajax has had seventy years to settle, and a machine walking on an out-of-level floor gets blamed for a suspension fault it does not have. We check the feet before opening the cabinet.

Hard water is what sets Ajax dishwashers apart. At about seven grains, scale shows up first as a chalky film on glasses and later as a coated heating element, which is why a machine here slowly stops drying rather than failing outright.

Where you are in Ajax changes this one. A dryer in the corner of a 1950s basement south of the tracks has to push its exhaust up and along to an exterior wall, often through two or three elbows, and every elbow costs airflow. Those houses generate most of our thermal fuse calls.
A fuse is a symptom, not a cause, so we clear the duct in the same visit. In the newer subdivisions north of the 401 the run is usually short and the fault is more often the element itself.

A single surface element that will not heat is the element or the receptacle it plugs into, and burnt contacts there are ordinary in any kitchen where a pot has boiled over. Fitting a new element into a damaged receptacle destroys it, so both get inspected.

Oven Repair in Ajax
An oven that runs hot or cold starts at the oven sensor and its connector, not at the board. It is a cheap resistance device that drifts with age, and measuring it cold takes minutes.
A door locked shut after a self-clean cycle often releases on its own once the cavity cools, so let it cool fully before booking. That is a call you can cancel.

Freezer Repair in Ajax
The Ajax version of this call is usually a chest freezer in an unheated garage. Some older freezers sense cabinet temperature only, so when the space around them drops far enough in January they stop cycling and the contents soften while the unit appears to be running normally.

Range Hood and Microwave Repair in Ajax
A hood that has stopped pulling is usually grease rather than a motor. Baffle filters that have not been through a dishwasher in two years choke a healthy fan, and in renovated kitchens we also find recirculating hoods that were never ducted outside at all.

Ajax Water and What It Does to Your Appliances
Ajax draws its water from Lake Ontario through the Ajax Water Supply Plant, which serves both Ajax and Pickering. The Region of Durham publishes hardness for the Pickering, Ajax, Whitby and Oshawa supply at 125 mg/L as calcium carbonate, which is roughly 7.3 grains per gallon.
That puts Ajax at the harder end of lake-supplied water in this part of Ontario. It is nothing like well water in Guelph or Waterloo, where 20 to 35 grains is normal, but it is meaningfully harder than London at about 6 grains and it deposits faster than most GTA customers expect. Durham's own position is worth repeating: a softener "is a personal preference and not required" with the water it supplies.
- Rinse aid does most of the work. The chalky film on glasses that owners read as a broken dishwasher is usually an empty rinse aid reservoir plus scale in the spray arm holes.
- Scale kills heating elements slowly. A dishwasher that stopped drying and a kettle that furs up are the same story at different speeds. We measure element resistance before condemning a control board.
- Ice makers feel it first. The fill valve and fill tube are the narrowest water path in the house, so an ice maker that has slowed is often scale rather than a failed assembly.
- If you are on a softener, watch the salt dose. Over-softened water foams, and foam inside a washer or dishwasher reads on the control board as a fault that is not there.
Hardness is one figure the Region publishes and we can quote. We do not publish street-by-street water numbers, because Durham does not break its supply down that way.
What We Find by Ajax Neighbourhood
Ajax is unusual among GTA towns in that you can almost date a house by where it stands. The town did not grow outward from an old main street; it was built as a wartime munitions community in 1939 on expropriated farmland, and the residential town was laid on top of it in waves. The age of the house predicts the appliance problem better than the brand does.

Getting to You in Ajax
