Dryer runs but will not heat
The drum turns, the cycle finishes on time, and everything comes out cold and damp. On an electric dryer this is the heating circuit rather than the motor: a burnt-out element, or the thermal fuse that cuts the heat when the machine has been running too hot — and a fuse that has blown has almost always been blown by a blocked vent.
Typical fix: Heating element at $166 to $232, or a thermal fuse at $92 to $185. We check the vent on the same visit, because a fuse replaced without clearing the duct blows again.
Dryer will not start at all
No drum, no light, nothing when you press Start. The machine will not run with the door open, so a worn door switch stops it dead even though everything else is fine. A failed thermal fuse or a damaged cord and terminal block do the same.
Typical fix: Door switch assembly or thermal fuse, both $92 to $185. A terminal block is the same band.
Two or three cycles to dry one load
The clothes come out warm and still damp and you run it again. Nine times in ten this is airflow rather than heat: lint packed into the duct, a crushed hose behind the machine, or a blocked vent flap outside. The dryer is working; the moisture has nowhere to go.
Typical fix: Clear the duct and the blower housing. If it still will not dry, the blower wheel or the moisture sensor bar is next.
Too hot, or it trips the breaker
Clothes hot to the touch, a hot cabinet, or the breaker going partway through a cycle. Worth taking seriously — overheating in a lint-filled duct is how dryer fires start. Usually a failed high-limit or cycling thermostat on top of restricted airflow.
Typical fix: High-limit thermostat at $92 to $185, plus clearing the duct. Stop using the dryer until it has been looked at.
Squealing, thumping or grinding
A squeal that rises with the drum, a rhythmic thump once a rotation, or a grinding that worsens every load. The drum rides on rollers and is turned by a belt, and both wear; the idler pulley that keeps the belt tight wears with them.

Stops part-way through the cycle
It starts, runs a while, then stops before the load is done, sometimes with a code on the panel. Often thermal — the machine cutting out as it overheats — and otherwise the timer or the main control board.
