Freezer is not freezing
The light comes on, the fan may be running, but the contents have gone soft. Start with the cheap end: condenser coils packed with dust make the compressor run constantly and still lose the battle, and clearing the coils fixes a fair share of these calls. If the coils are clean, it is the evaporator fan, the thermistor, or a compressor that is running without pumping.

Frost or ice building up inside
A sheet of ice on the back wall, or drawers frozen into place. The freezer is meant to melt that off several times a day, so ice means the defrost cycle has stopped: the heater, the thermostat or the timer. Freezer is cold but the fridge is warm
On a combined unit this is the single most common call we take. Both compartments are cooled by one evaporator in the freezer, and air is blown through to the fridge. When the evaporator fan fails or the damper sticks shut, the freezer keeps working and the fridge slowly warms up. We wrote up the full diagnosis in freezer cold but fridge warm.
Typical fix: Replace the evaporator fan motor or the air damper control assembly. Expect $185 to $232 in labour.
Water on the floor under the freezer
A puddle that keeps coming back, or ice forming under the bottom drawer. The defrost cycle produces meltwater by design, and it drains through a small tube to a pan by the compressor. Grinding, buzzing or clicking
Freezers are never silent, but a new noise is worth acting on. A grinding or ticking that changes when you open the door is the evaporator fan catching on ice. Typical fix: Replace the evaporator or condenser fan motor at $185 to $232. Left alone, a failing fan takes the cooling with it.
Door will not seal, or frost around the frame
The door drifts open, needs a shove, or you can see frost forming along the gasket. The magnetic seal goes hard and flattens with age, and a chest freezer lid takes the same wear. Every hour the seal leaks is humid room air condensing and freezing inside, so this one quietly causes the ice problem above.

What the Code on Your Freezer Panel Means
A standalone chest freezer usually has no display at all — on those, the temperature and the frost pattern are the diagnosis. Combined fridge-freezers do report codes, and they share the fridge’s fault list because they share its board, its sensors and its defrost circuit. Almost every freezer code resolves to one of three things: a thermistor, the defrost heater, or the evaporator fan.
