Alliston does not drink lake water. The town runs on groundwater wells, and on a well supply scale is the single biggest thing shortening appliance life here, which changes what we check first on a dishwasher, a kettle element or an ice maker. Labour runs $92 to $278, and the service call is free with the repair.

This table only lists the faults where being in Alliston changes the answer, which mostly means water. For the full symptom-by-symptom diagnostics on each appliance, the pages linked in each section below carry them.
| Appliance | What it is doing | What it usually is in Alliston | Applies to |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dishwasher | White film on glasses, chalky residue | Scale. On a groundwater supply it builds far faster than the manual assumes. Rinse aid and the spray arm holes first, then the element | town water or well |
| Dishwasher | Slowly stopped drying, then stopped cleaning | A scaled heating element. Scale insulates, so the decline is gradual and gets mistaken for a dying machine | town water or well |
| Dishwasher | Suds on the floor after a cycle | Detergent dose. Softened water needs far less than the box suggests, and the excess comes back as foam | softened water |
| Dishwasher | Not filling | The inlet screen. On a private well, sediment silts it up long before the valve fails | private well |
| Fridge | Ice maker slow or stopped | The fill valve and fill tube are the narrowest water path in the house, so they scale or silt first | town water or well |
| Fridge | Water filter clogging every few months | Sediment loading. A filter rated for a year can need changing in months on well water | private well |
| Washer | Greying whites, stiff towels, poor rinsing | Not a fault. Hardness plus an over-dosed detergent scoop. No part we fit changes this | town water or well |
| Washer | Stops or stalls part way through a fill | On a private well, a waterlogged pressure tank short-cycling the pump can starve the fill and present as a machine fault | private well |
| Washer | Musty smell | Residue in the door seal and dispenser. Hard water plus too much detergent is the usual recipe | town water or well |
| Dryer | Takes far longer than it used to | Lint screen and duct run. On a rural property also check the outside vent hood for a lint-jammed flap or a spring bird nest | rural property |
| Dryer | Getting too hot, or a burning smell | Stop using it. Lint against the heater and a blocked duct are the usual pair, and this one is a fire risk | any |
| Freezer | Contents softening in winter, unit seems fine | A freezer in an unheated garage or outbuilding. Some older thermostats sense cabinet air only and stop cycling when the room goes cold | unheated space |
| Dishwasher | Dishes coming out wet | Rinse aid first. If the reservoir is full, the heating circuit, and here that usually means a scaled element rather than a failed one | town water or well |
| Dishwasher | Door will not latch | The catch, or racks pushed forward. A door that will not latch stops the cycle before it starts | any |
| Washer | Banging, walking or shaking on spin | Load distribution first, then levelling and the suspension | any |
| Fridge | Loud or new noises | The evaporator or condenser fan. Gurgling from the back is refrigerant moving and is normal | any |
| Range | Oven door locked shut after a cleaning cycle | Let it cool fully, since many release on their own. After that the latch motor and its switch | any |
| Any | Water where it should not be | If you are on a private well, switch the pump off as well as the taps. A leak fed by your own pressure system keeps running while the pump does | private well |
| Any | Dead, nothing at all | The outlet and the breaker before anything inside the appliance | any |
Leaking right now? Close the taps behind the machine, switch it off at the breaker and call us rather than running another cycle. If you are on a private well, switch the pump off too: a leak fed by your own pressure system will keep going as long as the pump keeps running.
This is the appliance the water hits hardest. On a groundwater supply the heating element scales, and a scaled element does not fail outright: the machine slowly stops drying, then slowly stops cleaning, and owners replace a dishwasher that needed a descale and an element.
We measure element resistance before anyone spends money on a control board. If you have a softener, the other half of the story is detergent dose, because softened water needs far less than the box suggests and the excess comes back as foam on your floor.

The Alliston-specific one is anything the water touches. An ice maker fill valve and fill tube are the narrowest water path in the house, so on a well supply they scale or silt up long before the rest of the fridge is tired, and a water filter can load in months rather than the year the manual assumes.
Everything else is ordinary refrigeration, where the diagnosis that matters is separating a defrost fault from an evaporator fan from the sealed system, because those three cost very different amounts.

Half the washer calls we take in Alliston are not faults. Greying whites, stiff towels and a machine that seems to have stopped rinsing properly are what hard water and an over-dosed detergent scoop look like, and no part we fit will change that.
The real faults are the ordinary ones: a packed pump filter, a split door boot on a front loader, levelling. On a private well, add one check to the list, which is whether the pressure tank is short-cycling and starving the fill.

A dryer that tumbles cold has lost the element, a thermostat or the thermal fuse. The fuse is a symptom rather than a cause: it opens when the machine overheats, and the reason is nearly always the lint filter or the exhaust run.
On rural properties there is one extra thing to check that town houses rarely need, which is the outside vent hood. A flap held open by lint, or blocked by a bird nest in spring, chokes the run just as effectively as a crushed duct and is a good deal easier to fix.

An oven that runs hot or cold starts at the oven sensor and its connector, not at the board. It is an inexpensive resistance device that drifts with age, and measuring it cold takes minutes.
On the cooktop, one element that will not heat is the element or the receptacle it plugs into, and fitting a new element into a burnt receptacle destroys it, so both get inspected. We service electric cooking appliances; gas is outside what we take on at present.

The Alliston version of this call is usually a chest freezer in an unheated garage or an outbuilding, and that setting causes a fault of its own. Some older freezers sense cabinet temperature only, so when the space around them drops far enough in January they stop cycling and the contents soften while the unit looks like it is running normally.
If your freezer is somewhere unheated and your food has gone soft, say so when you book, because it changes what we expect to find.

A hood that has stopped pulling is usually grease rather than a motor. Baffle filters that have not been through a dishwasher in two years choke a healthy fan, and in renovated kitchens we also find recirculating hoods that were never ducted outside at all.
We repair built-in and over-the-range microwaves, where the unit and the cabinetry around it make a repair worth doing. Countertop units are rarely worth a technician visit and we say so on the phone rather than after we arrive.

Most of the pages on this site are about towns that drink lake water. Alliston is not one of them. The Town of New Tecumseth supplies Alliston from groundwater production wells, topped up through a transmission main from Collingwood's plant on Georgian Bay, and groundwater carries far more dissolved mineral than a lake does.
The Town says as much itself. Its own drinking water pages explain that hardness comes from calcium and magnesium carbonate, that it "is not known to have any specific health-related effects," and that it "can also result in scaling on pipes and appliances (e.g. hot water tanks, dishwashers)." That last clause is the whole of this section in one line.
Other pages on this site quote a figure because the municipality publishes one. New Tecumseth does not publish a hardness value for Alliston, and there is a good reason not to invent one: the town draws from several separate wells, and the water they produce is not identical. In the Town's own reporting, sodium alone ranges from about 9 mg/L at one well to around 34 mg/L at another. Hardness varies between sources in the same way.
So the honest answer is that Alliston water is hard, harder than anything lake-supplied, and the number at your tap depends on which well is feeding you and whether you have a softener. If you want a figure, a test is cheap. If you are on a private well, the Town points owners to the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit for testing.
Alliston splits into two kinds of call, and it helps us to know which one you are before we arrive.
On the town supply, pressure is steady and the water is treated, so what we deal with is scale and the slow decline it causes. On a private well, out in the rural parts of New Tecumseth, there are two more variables. Sediment reaches appliance inlet screens, so a dishwasher that will not fill is often a silted screen rather than a failed valve. And the pressure system itself matters: a waterlogged pressure tank short-cycling the pump can starve a washer mid-fill and present as a machine fault when the machine is fine.
If you are on a well, tell us when you book. It is the single most useful thing you can say, and it changes the order we check things in.
Not when you go ahead with the repair. The diagnostic fee is waived and you pay only for the repair itself. If you decide against the repair after we have diagnosed it, the diagnostic stands on its own.
Hard, and harder than any lake-supplied town, but New Tecumseth does not publish a hardness figure for Alliston and we will not make one up. The town draws from several wells whose water differs, so the number at your tap depends on which one feeds you. A test is inexpensive, and private well owners can go through the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit.
Many households here run one, which is the opposite of our advice on lake-supplied towns. What we will say is narrower and more useful: a softener protects elements and valves, an unmaintained or over-dosed softener causes foaming problems of its own, and neither of those is a reason to replace a working appliance.
Rural New Tecumseth as well as the town. Tell us the 911 number and anything awkward about the lane when you book.
Not at present. We service electric ranges, cooktops, dryers and the full refrigeration, dishwashing and laundry range on the electric side.
Yes. Alliston, Beeton and Tottenham have all been part of the Town of New Tecumseth since the 1991 amalgamation, and we cover all three on the same terms.
We order it and return. You are quoted the whole job up front, so the second visit does not become a second bill.
We cover Alliston and the rest of the Town of New Tecumseth, including Beeton and Tottenham, along with the rural properties in between. Beyond New Tecumseth we serve the wider Simcoe County area from our Barrie base, and the same number covers Orillia and Innisfil. Call (705) 315-1110 and we will tell you straight away whether your address is inside our Alliston run. Our appliance repair service areas page lists every city and neighbourhood on our run sheet.
Alliston work is done by our own technicians rather than a call centre passing your address to whoever answers. Every repair is quoted at your door before anything is opened, parts and labour carry up to a 3 month warranty, and the team is fully insured. Sealed refrigeration systems are opened only under an Ontario Ozone Depletion Prevention certificate, and we diagnose which side of that line your fault sits on before quoting.
On hard water in particular we would rather tell you that an appliance is doing its best with what it is being fed than sell you a part that changes nothing. Our fix or replace guide walks through the same arithmetic we use at the door.
