Dishwasher Repair in Aurora

At 130 mg/L, Aurora sits at the bottom of York Region's hard band, so we do not accept scale as the default explanation the way we would in Stouffville. When an Aurora dishwasher stops drying, the order we work in is: rinse aid reservoir, then the final rinse temperature, then the element.

That middle step is the one most often skipped. A heating element can read continuity on a meter and still fail to bring the final rinse up to temperature, because continuity confirms one thing only: that the circuit is closed.

Whether the element still makes its rated wattage is a separate measurement. We read the actual rinse temperature and compare the thermistor against the control board before any element comes out.

Then the rubber. Chloramine attacks EPDM, and a door gasket shows it by going hard and slightly glossy, often with fine cracking along the fold.

Squeeze it. A sound gasket springs back; a chloramine-hardened one stays compressed. If the machine is already open we replace it there and then, because a $30 part does not justify a second appointment.

Fridge and Freezer Repair for Aurora Homes

In the newer Bayview Northeast and Aurora Grove houses the fridge is usually counter-depth or built-in, set into millwork cut to the cabinet drawing. The clearance the manufacturer asks for often lost out to the cabinet elevation. We measure that gap first.

A condenser that cannot draw air raises head pressure. The compressor then runs longer and hotter to hold the same setpoint, and the symptom that follows looks exactly like a compressor on its way out.

Two things separate the cases. Feel the compressor and watch the cabinet temperature: if the compressor is hot and running almost continuously while the fridge still holds 4°C, the cooling system is doing its job under load. Clearance and a condenser clean solve that one, at a fraction of what a sealed-system repair costs.

Water pooling under the crispers is a blocked defrost drain. We clear it; there is no part to buy. When the fault does sit in the sealed system, Ontario requires an Ozone Depletion Prevention certificate to open it, and you hear which side of that line you are on before we quote.

Ice makers are the other Aurora regular, and the order of checks matters. A frozen fill tube and a silted inlet valve screen account for most of them, so both get looked at before the module is condemned. Watch what the machine produces: thin, hollow cubes mean the mould fills part way and still completes its harvest cycle, which puts the fault in the water supply. Washer Repair in Aurora

Rust-coloured marks on laundry send most people to their water first. In Aurora that is the wrong place to look. York Region's most recent quarterly figure puts iron in the Aurora system at 0.013 mg/L, against 0.776 in Nobleton and 0.460 in Holland Landing.

With the supply ruled out, an Aurora staining call becomes a search inside the machine.

On a front loader the usual source is the drum spider, the three-armed aluminium casting bolted behind the stainless drum. Detergent residue and hot water corrode the aluminium, and the grey-brown oxide it sheds transfers onto fabric.

You cannot see the spider without pulling the drum, so the diagnosis is done by hand and ear. Slip the belt off and turn the drum: a dry rumble that changes pitch with speed is the bearing, and a knock at one point in the rotation is the spider or something trapped between the tubs.

Then lift the drum at the front. Vertical movement you can feel through the door seal means the bearing has already worn, and at that stage the spider is usually going the same way.

A washer that stops partway through a fill is where the chloramine point turns practical. The flat washer inside each inlet hose coupling is usually EPDM. As chloramine hardens it, the washer swells and distorts, narrowing the bore.

The machine then times out because it never reaches the pressure switch level, the control logs a fill fault, and the inlet valve takes the blame. A pair of rubber washers and the mesh screens behind them cost a few dollars and get checked first. Our washing machine repair page carries the rest.

Electric Dryer Repair in Aurora

Water chemistry has nothing to do with dryers, so what matters in Aurora is the venting and the house. In the older streets around the heritage district, laundry sits in a basement and the 4 inch duct turns two or three times before it reaches an outside wall. Duct runs are rated by equivalent length. Every 90 degree elbow adds several feet of effective resistance on top of the tape measure figure, so a run that measures twenty feet can behave like forty.

That is the single most common reason an Aurora dryer takes two cycles to do one load, and it is also what kills the parts. Restricted airflow means the heater cannot dump its heat into moving air, the high-limit thermostat opens, the machine cools, the thermostat closes, and the cycle repeats until the thermal fuse gives up. Fitting a new thermal fuse without clearing the duct just resets the countdown. We check airflow at the outside vent before we quote any heating part, and when the run is the problem that is what you hear about.

Electric Oven and Stove Repair in Aurora

We work on the electric side: coil and radiant cooktops, induction, wall ovens and freestanding electric ranges. An oven that will not hold temperature is usually a failed bake element or a drifted temperature sensor, and both are measurable at your address.

Most modern ovens sense temperature with a resistance probe whose value climbs predictably with heat, so a cold reading taken at the plug and compared against the manufacturer's resistance chart tells us whether the sensor is honest before we touch the control board. An element that has failed open is obvious. The awkward case is an element that still heats but no longer reaches its rated output, which shows up as an oven that takes forty minutes to preheat and browns unevenly, and that one shows up in the current draw, never in how the element looks.

Aurora's older housing stock adds one thing here that the newer streets do not. A 240V range circuit in a house wired decades ago may be sound but undersized for a modern appliance, and when a range keeps tripping we establish whether the fault is the appliance or the supply before anyone spends money on parts. Range Hood and Microwave Repair in Aurora

We repair built-in and over-the-range microwaves. Countertop units are rarely worth a technician visit and you hear that on the phone, before a trip charge exists.

Where Aurora Water Comes From

Most towns draw from one place. Aurora does not. York Region operates seven production wells inside Aurora, between 98 and 104 metres deep, and blends that groundwater with treated Lake Ontario water piped up from the City of Toronto and the Region of Peel. What comes out of your tap is a mix, and the proportions are not fixed.

That single fact explains most of what we see here. Groundwater is mineral-rich because it moves slowly through calcium and magnesium sediments. Lake water is not. Blend the two and you land in the middle, which is exactly where Aurora sits.

What 130 mg/L actually means

York Region's most recent quarterly average for the Aurora system is 130 mg/L of calcium carbonate, or about 7.6 grains per gallon. The region publishes the figure for every system it runs, alongside the iron numbers, in its drinking water quality and monitoring data. On York Region's own scale, which runs soft to 60, moderately hard to 120, hard to 180 and very hard above that, Aurora is classed as hard. It is hard by a margin of ten.

We mention that because the word "hard" does a lot of unearned work in appliance sales. Aurora water will scale an element eventually. It will not do it this year.

Hardness across the neighbouring York Region systems

Within a twenty-minute drive, the same regional utility delivers water that is nothing like Aurora's. These are York Region's published quarterly averages for the surrounding systems, in milligrams per litre of calcium carbonate.

Stouffville water is roughly two and a half times as hard as Aurora's. If you have moved here from one of the well-fed communities on that list, your appliances are about to have an easier life, and the softener you were running there may be doing very little here. The reverse is also true, and worth knowing before you move a working dishwasher to Mount Albert.

Chloramine disinfection and what it does to rubber

York Region disinfects some of its systems with free chlorine and others with chloramine. Aurora is on chloramine. That is a deliberate choice with real advantages for drinking water, and it also behaves differently around rubber.

Chloramine is documented to attack certain elastomers, specifically EPDM, nitrile and neoprene, which are the families most sealing parts are made from. The visible tell is soft black or grey flakes in the first water drawn after the tap has stood, clearing quickly once it runs. If you see that, something rubber upstream is breaking down, and on an appliance the candidates are the inlet hose lining and the valve seals, both of them shallow repairs.

We are not going to tell you your appliance hoses are about to burst, because the published work on this covers plumbing connectors and toilet flappers, stopping short of appliance hoses. What we will do is look at the hoses and the gaskets when we have a washer or dishwasher open in Aurora, because it costs nothing to check and the failure mode is real.

What Aurora's iron figure rules out

Iron in the Aurora system averages 0.013 mg/L. For comparison, the same regional report puts Nobleton at 0.776 and Holland Landing at 0.460. Aurora's water is, for practical purposes, iron-free.

That is diagnostically useful because it removes a suspect. Orange or brown staining in an Aurora washer is not coming from the supply, so we stop looking at the water and start looking at the machine. On a well in Nobleton we would check the opposite way round first. Knowing which town you are in genuinely changes the order.

Old Aurora and the New Subdivisions

Aurora is two housing stocks sharing one name, and which one you live in changes what we bring and what we expect.

The Northeast Old Aurora Heritage Conservation District covers roughly 20 hectares north-east of Yonge and Wellington East, and its houses were built between the 1860s and the 1930s. Appliances in those houses have usually been fitted into rooms that were not designed for them. Kitchens have been reworked more than once, laundry has moved to the basement, and circuits have been extended more often than replaced. The practical consequences are consistent: tight cabinet openings that make a built-in fridge a two-person removal, long dryer duct runs with several bends, and panels whose labelling no longer matches reality.

The Bayview Wellington, Bayview Northeast and Aurora Grove subdivisions are a different job. Newer construction, purpose-built laundry rooms, short duct runs, adequate circuits, and appliances that were specified for the space they sit in. The faults there belong to the appliance itself.

Getting to You Around Aurora

  • Yonge Street and Wellington: the Yonge and Wellington intersection is the one place an Aurora arrival window reliably slips. If your address means crossing it at rush hour we will say so when we give you the window instead of quietly running late.
  • GO train commuters: a lot of Aurora households are out on the Barrie line during the day. We would rather book a window you are actually home for than leave a card at the door.
  • Heritage-district parking: some of the older streets are narrow with driveway-only parking. Mention it and we will plan for it.
  • Garage and basement appliances: if a fridge or freezer lives somewhere unheated, say so when you book. A unit running in an unheated garage through an Ontario winter can present a fault that is really an ambient temperature problem.

An unmaintained or over-dosed softener causes foaming problems of its own, and neither outcome is a reason to replace a working appliance.

Why are there black flakes in my water?

Aurora is disinfected with chloramine rather than free chlorine, and chloramine is known to break down EPDM, nitrile and neoprene, the rubbers used in most sealing parts. Soft dark flakes on the first draw that clear as the water runs usually mean rubber degrading somewhere upstream. It is worth having a plumber look at the flexible connectors, and when we have an appliance open we check the inlet hose and valve seals.
