One burner will not heat
The rest of the cooktop works, so it is not the supply. On a coil top it is usually the element itself or the receptacle block it plugs into, which burns at the contacts. On a ceramic or glass top it is the radiant element underneath,.
Typical fix: Replace the surface element ($92 to $185 on a coil top, $166 to $232 on glass) or the receptacle block at $92 to $185.
Burner is either off or full blast
No simmer — the ring cycles between nothing and maximum. That is the infinite switch behind the knob, the part that pulses power to hold a setting. When its contacts pit or weld, it loses every step in between. The same fault is why a burner sometimes will not switch off at all.
Typical fix: Replace the infinite switch. Expect $92 to $185 in labour.
Glass or ceramic top is cracked
A chip at the edge, a hairline across the surface, or a spiderweb from a dropped pot. A crack is not cosmetic on a ceramic top: spills reach the elements and the wiring underneath, and the surface can fail further under heat. Stop using the affected zone until it is looked at.
Typical fix: Replace the glass cooktop surface. The part governs the cost here, so we quote it after we have the model number.
Scorched receptacle or burnt terminal block
A coil element plugs into a receptacle block, and that plug carries the whole load of the ring through two small contacts. They arc, pit and eventually char, which shows up as a burner that works intermittently, a browned plug when you lift the element out, or a smell of hot plastic. Further back, the terminal block where the range’s supply cable lands does the same thing, and that one takes the whole appliance out.
Typical fix: Replace the receptacle block at $92 to $185. A burnt terminal block at the supply end is $166 to $232, and the cable end is inspected at the same time since the damage is usually on both halves.
Knob will not turn, or the touchpad is dead
On a knob model the shaft behind it has seized or the valve stem has stiffened with grease. On a touch-control cooktop the panel stops responding, often with a code, and that points at the membrane or the control board behind it — sometimes after a spill has run under the glass.
Typical fix: Free or replace the switch and knob at $92 to $185. A failed control board runs $185 to $232.
Induction hob buzzes or shuts itself off
A hum that rises with the power setting is normal physics on induction — a rattle is not, and neither is the hob cutting out mid-cook. That is almost always the cooling fan clogging or failing, which lets the power board overheat and trip out to protect itself.
Typical fix: Replace the cooling fan motor at $166 to $232 before the board goes with it.
What the Code on Your Stove Panel Means
Most ranges share one control board between the cooktop and the oven below, so a code on the display is often a cooktop symptom carrying an oven-side label. The second trap is assuming a code means the same thing on every badge: F9 is a door lock fault on some platforms but LG publishes it as an upper oven that is not heating, and F1 is a shorted key pad on a Frigidaire. The brand and model number come first.

Two things decide it: which part failed, and how old the range is. The $92 to $185 band — coil elements, infinite switches, receptacle blocks, indicator switches — is worth doing on almost any cooktop that is otherwise sound. The $166 to $232 band is where it gets real, and a cracked ceramic top is the clearest case of all: the glass is one of the most expensive parts on the appliance, and on an older range it can approach the price of replacing the whole thing.
