Washer will not spin
The cycle finishes but the clothes come out soaking, or the drum turns slowly and never gets up to speed. The machine will not spin until it knows the door is shut and the load is balanced, so a worn lid switch or door lock stops it before anything turns. Washer will not drain
Water still sitting in the drum when the cycle ends, and the machine either stops there or refuses to spin. Nearly always something between the tub and the standpipe: a blocked pump filter, a coin or an underwire jammed in the pump, or a drain hose kinked behind the machine.
Typical fix: Clear the pump and filter first. A drain pump replacement runs $185 to $232.
Water on the floor
A puddle at the front of the machine, or a damp patch you only find under the kickplate later. On a front-loader the door boot seal is the usual culprit once it perishes or catches a trapped coin; on any machine it can be a split fill or drain hose, or the pump housing itself.
Typical fix: Door boot seal replacement is $185 to $232. A hose is a fraction of that.
Shakes and walks across the floor
The machine bangs through the spin and moves out of its gap. Start with the obvious: an unbalanced load and unlevelled feet cause most of it. If it still walks on a level floor with an even load, the suspension is worn — shock absorbers on a front-loader, suspension rods on a top-loader.
Typical fix: Levelling is free and fixes a surprising share of these. Shocks or rods run $185 to $232.
Grinding or squealing on the spin
A rumble that rises with the spin speed, or a squeal that comes and goes. A worn drive belt squeals; a drum bearing grinds and gets louder every wash. The difference matters, because one is a cheap part and the other is the repair that decides whether the machine is worth keeping.
Typical fix: A belt is $92 to $185. A tub bearing is $185 to $278, which is where repair-or-replace gets weighed.
Smells of damp or mildew
A musty smell from the drum, worst on a front-loader that mostly runs cold washes. Biofilm builds up in the folds of the door seal and in the detergent drawer, and a sump still holding dirty water after every cycle keeps feeding it.
Typical fix: Clean the seal and drawer, then run a maintenance wash hot. If it comes back, the sump or pump filter is holding water.
