GE Dishwasher Error Codes and Troubleshooting

General Electric dishwashers are designed to be user-friendly, offering a wide range of features while still meeting Energy Star ratings. Even older models have typically provided years of reliable service. However, appliances can occasionally malfunction, and given our dependence on them, troubleshooting becomes essential. Continue reading to learn about common GE dishwasher error codes, their meanings, and how to efficiently resolve these issues.

Most Common GE Dishwasher Error Codes

Your model’s user manual contains specific information about your GE dishwasher, but here are some of the most common error codes:

Code Definition Solution
number + H The dishwasher is in Delay Start mode. Indicates the delayed wash start mode. This feature is useful for utilizing off-peak electricity rates, scheduling dishwashing when no one is using the shower, or ensuring clean dishes at a specific time. Note that unlatching the door does not cancel the delayed start mode.
C1 The pump-out during drain has exceeded 2 minutes. Clean the air gap. Replace or reposition the hose. Run the disposer to clear it. If the issue persists, contact service.
C2 The total pump-out cycle exceeds 7 minutes. Press RESET to stop the beep.
C3 The dishwasher will not drain. Disconnect power and reset the dishwasher.
C4 The machine filled twice after a power failure. Possible float switch failure or clogged drain/sump. Press Start, then Cancel/Reset. Tap the float cover to unstick it. Check the sump area in the back bottom of the tub for debris. If the issue persists, contact service.
C5 The pump-out time is too short. Ensure the water supply is turned on. Try the same cycle again. Tap the float cover to unstick it.
C6 Water temperature is too low. The incoming water temperature should be at least 120°F. Run the faucet near the dishwasher before starting to remove cold water. Adjust the water heater temperature. Avoid using the washing machine or taking showers while the dishwasher is running. Utilize dishwasher options that extend cycle time and add heat.
C7 The dishwasher’s water temperature sensor circuit is inoperative. Disconnect power at the circuit breaker for 30 seconds, then reset the dishwasher. If the issue persists, contact service.
C8 The detergent cup is blocked from opening fully. Remove the obstruction (e.g., silverware, pan). Relatch the door and wait 30 seconds for the cup to open.
PF Indicates a power failure to the dishwasher. Select the desired cycle and options, press Start, and the dishwasher should function normally.
Cup Open The detergent cup has not been closed. This reminder ensures detergent is added, and the cup is latched. The cycle will not start, but you can override it by pressing Start again without opening the door. If the issue persists, contact service.
LEAK DETECTED A possible leak has been detected. The cycle will be canceled on models with leak detection. If "LEAK DETECTED" is displayed, contact service.
999 Possible leak detected on models with the “Floor Protect with Alert” feature. For others, the control unit needs a reset. The dishwasher will not start. Contact service.
H2O Indicates a low water situation. If H2O appears only during the 1-Hour Wash, schedule service. If it appears during other cycles (AutoSense, Heavy, Normal, or Light), check that the inlet water hose is not kinked. If the issue persists, call for service.

Some dishwashers may work seamlessly for a while before suddenly stopping, while others may show warning signs like unusual noises, flashing signals, incomplete cycles, or improper drainage. Recognizing error codes early can prevent further issues.

Error codes are designed to help technicians diagnose problems, but they do not always indicate the exact issue—sometimes, the machine misinterprets signals. This is where professional service makes a difference. Our team specializes in GE appliance repair and has extensive experience troubleshooting and fixing dishwasher issues.
