GE washers that feature the Hydrowave wash system do not have a traditional transmission. Instead, the motor handles most of the drive system. While the Hydrowave system typically enhances washing performance, it can also place extra stress on the motor, causing the washer to shut down when motor-related issues occur.
To reset a Hydrowave GE washer, follow these steps:
Important Notes:
Once this is done, the motor should be reset, and you can start a new wash cycle.
Important Note:
The washer should remain disconnected from power for two minutes. Once power is restored, the washer should be reset and ready for a new cycle.
If the washer doesn't reset after following the above steps, your model may require specific reset instructions. Check the washer’s manual for guidance. GE washer manuals are available for download from the GE website.
The washer’s technical sheet, often located behind the control panel, may also contain reset instructions. Remember to disconnect the power before removing the control panel screws.
After resetting, run a short wash cycle without any clothes in the washer. If the washer fills with water and starts agitating, the reset has been successful. You can cancel the cycle or advance it to the spin cycle to empty the washer. Alternatively, add clothes and complete the wash cycle.
If the reset doesn’t work, the control board might be the problem. The control board is located behind the control panel in newer GE washers.
Inspect the control board for signs of burning, short circuits, or corrosion. If it appears damaged, replacing it may resolve the issue. However, it’s best to have a GE technician test the control board to confirm if it’s faulty.
If the washer’s controls are unresponsive, the control panel may be malfunctioning. Upon unscrewing the control panel, check for any visible damage. Sometimes, a loose wiring harness or damaged wiring can be the issue.
If necessary, replace the control panel. To ensure the problem lies with the control panel, contact a GE technician for a professional diagnosis.
If the washer fails to respond, a power surge or inconsistent voltage may be the cause. To check for power supply issues, it’s a good idea to contact an electrician.
If you're resetting the washer because it's not filling with water, consider the following:
