How to Reset a GE Washer

How to Reset a GE Washer

GE washers that feature the Hydrowave wash system do not have a traditional transmission. Instead, the motor handles most of the drive system. While the Hydrowave system typically enhances washing performance, it can also place extra stress on the motor, causing the washer to shut down when motor-related issues occur.

To reset a Hydrowave GE washer, follow these steps:

  1. Unplug the washer for one minute.
  2. Plug the washer back in, then lift and lower the lid six times within 12 seconds.

Important Notes:

  • After plugging the washer in, you must start lifting and lowering the lid within 30 seconds.
  • Lift the lid at least two inches to break the magnetic connection.
  • Ensure the lid is fully closed each time.

Once this is done, the motor should be reset, and you can start a new wash cycle.

How to Reset GE Washers with a Timer Control Knob

How to Reset GE Washers with a Timer Control Knob

  1. Unplug the washer, or turn off the washer’s circuit breaker or fuse.
  2. Rotate the timer knob clockwise once, stopping at any setting other than the final spin cycle.
  3. Restore the power to the washer.

Important Note:

The washer should remain disconnected from power for two minutes. Once power is restored, the washer should be reset and ready for a new cycle.

How to Reset a GE Washer with an Electronic Control Panel or Knob

  1. Disconnect the power to the washer, either by unplugging it or turning off the circuit breaker or fuse.
  2. Wait two minutes, then reconnect the power.
  3. When you turn the washer back on, it should be reset. You may need to press the Cancel button or select a wash cycle to complete the reset.

If the Washer Doesn’t Reset

If the washer doesn't reset after following the above steps, your model may require specific reset instructions. Check the washer’s manual for guidance. GE washer manuals are available for download from the GE website.

The washer’s technical sheet, often located behind the control panel, may also contain reset instructions. Remember to disconnect the power before removing the control panel screws.

How to Test if the Washer Has Been Reset

After resetting, run a short wash cycle without any clothes in the washer. If the washer fills with water and starts agitating, the reset has been successful. You can cancel the cycle or advance it to the spin cycle to empty the washer. Alternatively, add clothes and complete the wash cycle.

If the Washer Still Doesn’t Reset or Isn’t Working

Control Board Issue

Control Board

If the reset doesn’t work, the control board might be the problem. The control board is located behind the control panel in newer GE washers.

Inspect the control board for signs of burning, short circuits, or corrosion. If it appears damaged, replacing it may resolve the issue. However, it’s best to have a GE technician test the control board to confirm if it’s faulty.

Control Panel Issue

Control Panel

If the washer’s controls are unresponsive, the control panel may be malfunctioning. Upon unscrewing the control panel, check for any visible damage. Sometimes, a loose wiring harness or damaged wiring can be the issue.

If necessary, replace the control panel. To ensure the problem lies with the control panel, contact a GE technician for a professional diagnosis.

Incoming Power Issue

If the washer fails to respond, a power surge or inconsistent voltage may be the cause. To check for power supply issues, it’s a good idea to contact an electrician.

Washer Not Filling with Water

If you're resetting the washer because it's not filling with water, consider the following:

  • Ensure the water supply to the washer is turned on.
  • Confirm the water inlet hoses are properly connected (the hot water hose should be connected to the hot inlet, and the cold to the cold inlet).
  • Check that the screens on the water inlet hoses are not clogged.
  • Verify that the water pressure is sufficient (between 20 and 120 PSI, depending on the model).
  • Replace the water inlet valves if necessary.
